ONLY one application has been submitted for a premises licence to operate a so-called large casino in Hull.
The bid by Apollo Resorts and Leisure Ltd. relates to the proposed £100m Manor Mill development next to Drypool Bridge in the city centre.
With no other casino applications being submitted before a recent deadline set by Hull City Council, it means the Apollo scheme will be the only one to be considered by licensing councillors later this month.
Apollo's interest in Hull was first revealed by the Mail just over two years ago.
At the time, the international casino operator said it was keen to invest in Hull with plans for a £25m leisure complex over three floors within the Manor Mill development.
Speaking to the Mail at the time, group chairman Paul Gregg, a Scarborough-born multi-millionaire and a former director of Everton football club, said: "We think it is an exciting opportunity for Hull.
"We are not only looking at opening a casino under the government's new gambling legislation but also a full destination resort including five new restaurants on the site to create a distinctive attraction.
"We have looked at other cities and a number of other sites in Hull but believe this is the most appropriate,"
The group is a joint venture between UK-based Apollo Resorts and Leisure and Casinos Austria International, which operates more than 70 venues in 15 different countries.
It's not clear whether the subsequent economic downturn has curbed those some of those ambitions.
But Manor Property Group, the North Ferriby-based developers behind the overall scheme, recently secured extended planning permission allowing them more time to start work on site because of the slow-moving casino licensing application process.
Other elements of the project earmarked for the site of the derelict former Rank Hovis mill include a 185-room hotel, a 23-storey apartment block and student accommodation.
Licensing councillors are due to consider applications for the large casino licence awarded to Hull at a meeting on January 30.
