The history
Built in 1974 and named after the local boxer who fought Muhammad Ali this building earmarked for demolition has recently been given Grade II listed status. It features a very striking “big top” aspect to its massive dome interior that houses multiple rooms for various sports beneath it. The centre shut its doors in 2019 after a new structure was opened nearby, siting high maintenance and heating costs amongst the various reasons for closure. It was later earmarked as a standby morgue during covid in addition to the huge car park being used as a drive thru covid testing centre.
The explore
I was surprised by how un-trashed the building was, especially given its size and location. The huge dome carries the outside noise in a cavernous way and being the only person in such a large space made every noise amplify in a way that was kind of cool. Despite it being widely open in its interior it was still very easy to get lost or miss bits. After I thought I was done I came across a martial arts room and squash courts!
