Introduction
The villages of Southam and Stockwell are built on a Jurassic layer of limestone, providing limestone for the surround areas for centuries. In the 1890s the railway was constructed, and the quarry increased in productivity. I’m unsure as to when the cement works was first constructed; however it remained in operation until 1999 when the work was outsourced to the larger cement works at Rugby.
The explore was great fun as the site is still in partial use and we had great fun ducking and diving out of view of security. We saw him on several occasions, however spent 3 hours on site unhindered.
The Cement Making Process
Limestone is quarried in the quarry opposite, and crushed in a series of grinders to a fine powder. To this limestone powder, sand and clay are added and the mixture is further ground before being transported to the top of the heating tower via a conveyor belt. The mixture is then fed through the tower, pre heated then fed into the kiln where it becomes clinker. Finally the Clinker is mixed with gypsum, stored in silos ready for transportation as cement.
