This was my first bit of non-permission exploration (hence the Rookie report) and I met Urbex at the local ASDA and then we made our way to Severalls. The FlashEarth link is here

As most of you will know, Severalls was built in 1910 and first opened in May 1913, housing up to 1800 patients. Some further accommodation blocks were built between this time and 1935. It was closed in approximately 1996, and had deteriorated substantially since. There are, however, still some great bits to see. The future for the site is that it is likely to be knocked down (except some parts such as the Admin Block) and a residential development take its place. Some works seem to have started but they are very small scale and may well be restricted to the unsafe buildings only.

We tried the entrance Urbex usually uses but Security had found out about it. While looking for a suitable tree to aid our entry, we managed to find a very easy (but well hidden) alternative entry point. Once inside, Urbex showed me around and after about 30 minutes he got a call from Lizzie who also joined us. What followed was a thorough tour of the site including all the places that are usually done. We also had a bit of fun exploring some of the less visited rooftops.

The pictures below give some flavour of the site, but due to the number of previous reports I have left out the standard-ish shots. Please note that I am using a rubbish camera (and haven’t done much photography before) so please be gentle.

Here it goes

[1] A ‘blinding’ shot in the Admin Block roof

[2] A view of the Water Tower from the top of the Admin Block

[3] A rather solid moss covered chimney on the Admin block

[4] A view of another Chimney

[5] Another view, I think from the Admin bloc

[6] These guys were worried about Global Warming way before everyone else

[7] One of the flooded corridors

[8] Again some flooded and a shot of Lizzie

[9] No idea what this room was for
PC110034.jpg

[10] Surely all the patients here were slow!
PC110038.jpg

[11] A bit of broken glass
PC110044.jpg

[12] Another view of the Water Tower (I was itching to get up there!)
PC110046.jpg

[13] This bit of memorabilia was a bit hidden away
PC110053.jpg

[14] There is whole corridor of similar paintings
PC110059.jpg

[15] Another shot of the Water Tower
PC110072.jpg

[16] I finally got to the top of the Water Tower
PC110079.jpg

[17] Another corridor

[18] Urbex and I messing around on the roof

[19] A Ward

[20] More broken glass and a shelter

A vast number of pictures I know but hopefully they show some of the story. If you haven’t been…then pop along before it’s too late.

Almost OK. Two things though.

Keep quiet about the way in. It's unique and better not get closed.

Go to photobucket and resize your pictures a bit smaller.

No worries OT we were going to keep the entrance to ourselves.

With regards to the size of the photos, I thought I had followed the FAQ bits and done them at 640x480 as I was meant to. Should I be taking them down to 320x240?

Giving it a second look, it's pictures 2, 3 and 4. 640 pixels on the long side is a good size.

I only realised I could limit the size I uploaded at after the first batch. I obviously went back and re-sized photo1 but hadn't done 2-4. They are now all the right size.
