Evening guys,
Today I met up with Dubbed Navigator and Andrew B to explore Severalls near Colchester. Was a great day out, and I’m so glad I’ve finally ticked this one of my list.
History
Severalls was built in 1910 and first opened in May 1913. The architect was Frank Whitmore whose design was based upon the symmetrical “Echelon plan” centred around an admin and service core, covering 300-acres, and housing 2000 patients.
The style was the ‘Queen Anne’, a mix of neo-gothic and neo-classical popular with Edwardian architects. There are many little exciting details around Severalls which demonstrate this fusion of styles. The Asylum was expanded between 1910 and 1935 with numerous pavilions, villas and accommodation blocks.
The hospital finally closed in 1997.
Today
The land has yet to be sold, however it looks likely that the site will be demolished following years of neglect and numerous arson attacks. Only the admin building and the water-tower are listed.
Regards,
