Sheffield Courthouse, Sheffield - November 2011
Visited with fishbrain. Massive credit to rusty
Having spent much of the last couple of weeks being out of my comfort zone and getting high, it was nice to get my feet back on the ground in Sheffield.
I really enjoyed this, I just wish Sheffield's parking restrictions allowed us some more time to chill in there. Thanks again to rusty for putting this one on the radar for us.
History
The Courthouse was originally commissioned to replace Sheffield’s first Town Hall and was built in 1807-08 by Charles Watson. The Clock Tower was added in 1866-7.
By the 1890’s the building had become too small to act as the Town Hall so in 1896-7 it was extended once more and became Sheffield Crown Court and Sheffield High Court. By 1990, the courts had moved to a new premises and since 1997 the Courthouse has been disused.
In 2007, it was named by the Victorian Society as one of their top ten buildings at risk.
