Sheffield Old Town hall /Courts - Sheffield
Sheffield Old Town Hall stands on Waingate, Sheffield, opposite Castle Market.
The Old Town Hall was built in 1807–8 by Charles Watson, and was designed
to house not only the Town Trustees but also the Petty and Quarter Sessions.
The initial building was a five-bay structure fronting Castle Street, but it was
extended in 1833 and again in 1866 by William Flockton (1804-1864) of Sheffield
and his partner for the project, Abbott; the most prominent feature was the
new central clock tower over a new main entrance that reoriented the building
to Waingate. At the same time, the building’s courtrooms were linked by
underground passages to the neighbouring Sheffield Police Offices.
By the 1890s, the building had again become too small, and the current Sheffield
Town Hall was built further south. The Old Town Hall was again extended in 1896-7,
by the renamed Flockton, Gibbs & Flockton, and became Sheffield Crown Court and
Sheffield High Court. In the 1990s, these courts moved to new premises, and since
at least 1997 to present, the building remains disused.
It was recently named by the Victorian Society as one of their top ten buildings most at-risk
Visted with Marsden1002, and what seemed like half of the urbex community of Yorkshire...
I knew this place was popular, but this was ridiculous....as was the comedy access

there's some proper brickwork and tiling on show in these upper level cells
and a rather impressive stairwell up towards the main court-room
this is the entrance to court no 1..strangely all the lights were on in the hallway
but the actual courtroom was pitch black and somewhat trashed as you can see
the middle shot is the main, and most impressive court in the building, however due to a minor
lens fail I didn't get any decent shot...I think a return visit may be on the cards
one of many smaller courts, not as impressive as the larger rooms but in good nick considering
now this was an odd room, a live t.v, complete with white noise, and at the far end of the room,
a fireplace replete with fairy lights and some rather worrying graffiti...gtfo
basement cells, complete with obligatory peely paint
onwards and upwards towards the clock tower, another camera fail meant my shots were restricted
to either camera-phone or pissed up out of focus headache inducing rubbish, but anyway...
two pigeon poo covered ladders later, and we were up in the tower
nice big clocks

standard rooftop view towards the outskirts of the city centre
Possibly one of the best places I've been to in a long while, chilled out and no hiding from security...it's all good

Thanks for looking
