I found the plane wreck at Sólheimasandur, Iceland by chance. The previous day, I had been on a Jeep tour and the tour guide happened to mention a crashed plane in the middle of nowhere. Me being a lover of planes and urbexing, this was a must-see.

The US Douglas C-117 [military version of a DC-3] plane crashed landed on the black beach in 1973 when it ran out of fuel. Apparently it was mistaken though and the wrong fuel tank was used, and actually there was a 2nd full tank.

This plane is in the middle of nowhere. Strangely, and thankfully, having had so much snow in the first few days I was there, the snow had cleared for this one day only, which allowed me to easily find the site. But had there been snow or any loss of visibility as other days had been, it would have been very difficult to find, especially in a little hire car with tiny studded wheels! Amazing site, pretty much like the rest of the country!
