Report - St. Luke's Hospital, Huddersfield, Jan '11

St. Luke's started out as Crosland Moor workhouse for the poor and needy in 1872. It catered for 400 sick and harmless mental cases of the area and cost £26,000 to build. Later a fever ward and two vagrant wards were added. It eventually became a hospital caring for the geriatric and mentally ill.

A short patient's account of spending 1 night there:

Bless the National Health Service and the good that it does for the people of the UK but for me the 18 or so hours I spent in St Lukes hospital just added to the hell I was going through!

The ward I was in was full of mental patients that I found impossible to cope with. My bed was next to a man's who laid on it all of the time and just stared into space. His hair and nails were uncut to a such a point that he looked more like an animal.

Other patients were rambling on about Satan or continually trying to scrounge cigarettes - my confusion and paranoia increased by the minute.

When my wife arrived I immediately begged her to get me admitted to a private hospital as I was a member of a Personal Health Scheme via my work. She said that she would do her best and then had to leave as visiting time was over. So I spent a horrendous night in the house of surrealism (or so it seemed at the time).

Explored with another member, sorry for the picture quality, but I'd been awake for about 30 hours after a heavy night of enjoyment and it's my first attempt at using LR rather than PS. Still a great explore, especially whizzing down the mega corridors on a wheely chair. Saw a whole new part that I hadn't seen last time, and there's still more to see! Someone had been around turning all the lights off, but they all still worked with the flick of a switch, including the ones in the morgue which saved a bit of time!
