Stonecross Mansion Ulverstone
Playing catch up at the moment, this is from a visit I did in September last year.
Bit of History
Stonecross was built by Myles Kennedy in 1874 one of 3 sons of Charles Storr
Kennedy and Elizabeth(nee Burton)of the Burton Banking Family.
C S Kennedy began the mining at Roanhead and Askam, and on his death in 1857
The business was taken over by his eldest son Charles Burton Kennedy and the
Youngest son Myles. When Charles died in 1865 Myles took over the company.
Myles Kennedy married Margaret Rowley in 1861 and the had 16 Children 6 sons
And 10 daughters.
The building did house a large painting on the grand staircase, depicting Tennysons
Sleeping Beauty. This was in 3 panels and 12’ high Depicting The Arrival,The Revival
And The Departure, apparently using Family membersAnd friends. This was painted
by Lucien Besche ,signed and dated 1880.
Beche was a miniature painter for Mintons and later Copeland ,so its seems unusual
For him to paint such a large work.
The floor tiles in the main hall are by Minton so maybe there was some connection.
In recent years the Building was the Head Office of Marl International who spent
Thousands of pounds on restoring the building. After being refused planning permission
To extend the property to the rear, they had to move elsewere.
I understand that the house and grounds are owned by Persimmion Homes and
Although it is obvious they have done some work to the property ,its future is
Unknown.
Really glad I went when I did, because I understand that the House has now been made
Well secure.
