Coming home from Scotland after a Christmas break with the girlfriend I did some railway related exploring on the way back. I had come across this online so decided to have a gander. It's actually a really enjoyable visit with some beautiful engines to see. One of the thing I really liked was the turntable. The Tanfield waggonway was built in 1720 to transport coal from the collieries around Durham. The line operated from 1725 to 1964. It is said the preserved line is the oldest working railway in the country. The yard has a large shed called the "Marley Hill Engine Shed". It was built in 1854 and was in use till 1970. I never had time to look but by all accounts it's quite stunning. There is 28 locos on the site but there are three working with some under going restoration. It's the largest collection of steam engines in the country.
