An abandoned thermal baths known as 'La Raillere' sits high up near the base of the towering mountains in the south of France in the region of 'Hautes-Pyrénées ' situated near the ski-resort of Cauterets.
Many rheumatism and arthritic related cures were practiced here on those who would travel far enough into the mountains to seek out these alternative remedies in the hope of alleviating their pain.
La Raillere used to operate its own tram station which opened in 1897 to bring clients from Cauterets up to the baths, however maintenance became too costly and the station closed down in 1970.
A new thermal baths facility has been relocated to the centre of Cauterets and as a result the dilapidation of this isolated building is left as a reminder to tourists and walkers heading up in the mountains to see the famous 'Pont d’Espagne’.
A small section of the buildings is still used to produce sulphurous mineral enriched clay which is exported to other local thermal baths in the areas and therapy treatment centers and when walking through this building the sulphurous egg-like smell can be over-powering in some areas.
(no sign of even any kids having been in this place, heres some pix).
