The Turkish Baths were built as part of the Carlisle Swimming Baths and opened in 1910. Said to have cost £10,000 they are in the Byzantine style with the glazed tilework produced by Minton And Hollins of Stoke on Trent. There is a cold room with plunge pool, sauna and a modern steam room. The idea is to get as hot as possible and then plunge into the icy waters of the pool (eek!)
One of only four such Victorian type establishments left in the UK, it was awarded Grade 2 Listed status, this year. As photography is strictly prohibited in the baths complex, this is a rare chance to see inside. Permission was granted for this visit.
