I seem to be exploring more of abandoned Europe than UK now because of work. Not a bad thing as I've popped my Italian urbex cherry!

Explored this abandoned paper mill in Italy mid-week after finishing work early. It's a fairly big site but it's more of an empty shell as the majority of the heavy machinery has been removed, having been abandoned for the last 30 years. Several buildings spread over two banks of a river and some over 10 floors high.

A good 90 minutes walk from the nearest train station, I spent a few hours wandering the shell of the paper mill before moving to another abandoned site in an nearby region. Nature has certainly reclaimed most of the site with trees and bushes growing deep within each building I visited.

From what I understand, the paper mill was abandoned in the mid 1970s having been producing paper since the 18th century. The mill was a major employer for the local towns employing over 3000 workers in the hey day of the 1950s and 60s. However by the 1970s, cheap paper from Eastern Europe plus the scarity of wood made the mill uneconomical. Today nothing is left with nature slowly reclaiming back the land.
