Not much if any major history i can find but heres something:

Wharram Chalk Quarry is located close to Wharram le Street in North Yorkshire and is close to Wharram Percy mediaeval deserted village.

It is said that the quarry was operated by Casebourne & Co. in 1916, who had cement factories in Leeds and at Durham. The quarry was closed in the 1930's but reopened shortly after at a reduced capacity. It is unclear for the reasons why but it soon closed again for good in the 1940's.

Chalk was quarried here and crushed ready for use in cement, it was also used in making lime, with lime kilns on site and as a flux in the iron and steel works in Teeside. The operation of the quarry can be seen in the short film called, The Chalk Getters - A Wharram Study.

The quarry is now owned by the Birdsall Estate Company who has leased the land as a nature reserve in 1966.

Took me and BruceWayne about half an hour to reach this place from york ( after getting lost and missing the turnings ) this is only our 2nd "explore" and my first report so please be kind ;-)

So it begins

The "Wharram" sign was removed from the local station at the start of World War II, so that if Hitler invaded, he wouldn't know where he was. Archaeologists working on Wharram Percy discovered it on a local pig sty and mounted it on their HQ.
