Whitchurch hospital was a psychiatric facility in the north of Cardiff that opened in April 1908.
The grade 2 listed building finally closed its doors in April 2016 after a 108 years and has remained empty ever since.
At the time that it was a newly built asylum, it was designed to house around 750 patients over ten wards, 5 each for men and women.
The hospital was self sufficient with a 150 foot water tower, steam powered electric generators and contained a farm which provided food and theraputic work for the patients.
In the summer of 2024 i decided to wake up early and take a trip down to North wales and explore some of the redundant mental health hospitals and i managed two in one day after a gruelling 4 hour drive from Derby.
After the first hospital i ended up in Cardiff and didnt expect any success as id heard they had upped security measures and had fresh installations of i.R cameras but managed to get in fine.
After making my way in i had around 3 or 4 hours inside soaking up the natural decay and was overwhelmed at the size of the place.
The corridors just seemed to go on forever and im sure i didnt manage to see it all but took photos of what i could.
If those walls could speak im sure they could tell a story or two.
Thanks for looking.
