Was on the way out of Nottingham recently and the front door of Walter Danks was swinging in the breeze, so popped in for a few minutes and really wish I hadn't, tbh the name of the company describes it perfectly. Sketchy and rotten floors mostly concealed beneath a liberal carpet of pigeon shit.

I thought this was quite interesting. Not really anywhere else to post about it so figure I might as well do it here. Bit of a mystery...

Was trying to climb a crane a couple of weeks ago and there was a lock at the top, as seems to be tradition. Interestingly, it was attached to a chain which wrapped around something I couldn't quite see instead of being attached to the structure etc. However, while I could lift it up a little bit, it wasn't enough for me to squeeze through. It was quite high up so I figured the crane operator might be kind of lax with the key because you wouldn't wanna go back down and back up the stairs if you left it behind etc. So I figured he might have just stowed the key nearby, like some people leave spare keys under plant pots by their front doors. Lifted the crane shutter door thing and swept my hands around the perimeter. Heard a metallic chink sound and thought I'd hit the jackpot but found this instead of a key. It's literally a part of the crane floor lattice that's been cut off and seemingly deliberately placed right next to the chain.

I'm just wondering (1) is this something that can be used to shift the chain away from one of the things it was wrapped around (hard to explain), and/or (2) was the crane operator just fucking with anyone who might think he'd be stupid enough to leave the key in a hiding place above the locked floor? I'm personally leaning towards (2) but thought it was interesting. Bits of crane lattice don't just come off like this... And why would it be literally exactly where you'd put your feet if you were actually climbing through it? He'd surely have removed it or accidentally kicked it off by now if there was no reason for it to be there... There wasn't any other debris of any type anywhere else along the crane.
