Saw this come up a few times recently on Instagram and Facebook so thought we would pay a visit. Simple access, hilarity at the road name coz we’re childish.
It’s very dark inside and looks to have perhaps suffered a fire at some point though I can’t find anything to back this up. It smelled of sage so wonder if some paranormal groups have been in there. A few of the rooms were wrecked and the lighting was terrible. short and sweet report.
History -
This unique building was originally constructed in 1868, serving as a place of worship for the Congregational Church. Known as a 'tin tabernacle' due to the use of corrugated iron in its construction, Old Heath Church has remained unused for over a decade. It was erected as an outreach mission for Lion Walk Congregational Church. It is largely of corregated iron structure and was known locally as the 'Tin Tabernacle'. The chapel was enlarged in 1888 and again in 1898. In the 1980s when Lion Walk became a United Reformed church, Old Heath became independent and retained its congregational status
In December 2014, a planning application was made to Colchester Council to demolish the building and rebuild a new church on the site. The chapel was up for auction last year.
