So I decided to take a look at what had become of the classic Severalls Asylum in Colchester, Essex earlier this year. Like many of the UK's asylums it is being converted into a luxury housing estate. Whilst some asylums have been totally demolished and others have been entirely kept, this one is somewhere in between with a few serving buildings. Whilst it's a shame so much was demolished especially when the conversions are so nicely done, I do think they've done the remaining buildings justice considering how rough they looked when I visited in 2015 during abandonment shortly before redevelopment. I have loads of pics from these visits I need to edit and wack up at some point.
Whilst not an urbex per se, I took a stroll around the site and got a few nice architectural photographs of the surviving remnants which I think many of you would still like to see. I wonder if the utility tunnels are still underground - let me know if anyone has any maps of their routes.
History wise, the aslyum was built c.1913 to expand capacity from Essex's original county asylum at Warley. I believe that Runwell built in the 1930s was later constructed as overflow for Severalls. The site was used up until the 1990s when it became abandoned and fell into heavy decay.
