Aberthaw B Power Station - Autumn 2022
Been sitting on this one for almost a year now! I’m not entirely sure why I left it so long; I think a mix of classic Landie letting reports build up; and then releasing them all in one go, and an addition of all the trouble we had this year with other Power Stations and goons getting injunctions put on other ones!
Either way; I do have a keen love of Power Stations, despite only doing a mere handful myself. These are my photos from almost a year back when I visited on a sort of Wales/Northern Road Trip. I rather liked it in its quite decayed state by this point. Lots of rust and decay. LUSH.
Spent an evening and half a day in this one.

The disused Aberthaw B was located on the Welsh South Coast as a strategic location for the National Grid to ensure consistent power to the more sparsely populated areas within Wales. Burning both Coal and Biomass, this power station produced 1,560 megawatts across its three turbines and was cooled entirely by seawater, eliminating the need for cooling towers; this explains the lack of them! Despite being due to close WAY back in 2006; the plant extended its life by fifteen years by installing Flue-Gas Desulfurization (a method of removing sulphur dioxide from emissions, mostly using limestone).
Alas, this was not enough for the EU’s regs at the time; and in 2015 they took the UK to court over Aberthaw’s emissions in the case of “European Commission v UK” in which, The EU ruled in their own favour. While the UK government basically ignored the foreign court’s ruling, they did stick to their own targets and shut Aberthaw B before their 2025 deadline for no-coal power.
