This Air Raid Shelter in Port Glasgow was built for the workers of the nearby Gourock Ropeworks, and was the largest privately owned shelter within the UK at the time. It is believed to have been built before the outbreak of WW2 by a group of Polish workers... apparently taking them 6 months to complete.

The Shelter has remained in pretty good condition overall... it seems to be flooded more often than not but that wasn't a problem for me as I'd brought my wad0rz. The biggest problem for me was access, which wasn't as straightforward as I'd hoped, and the fact it was absolutely pissing down did not help. Still, I did get in so here's some pics....

Down we go...

The water throughout most of the shelter remained at about a foot deep, maybe a little over in parts.

You did an urbex!

Looks interesting. Wouldn’t have fancied taking a shit in one of those toilets though.

Much appreciated... your donation will go towards getting some "Exploring with elhomer12" hoodies printed :p

You did an urbex!

I did indeed. Been thinking of doing this for a while but didn't know if there was access, so was putting it off

Liking this. Very well light, loving the reflections in the water. Did you wade through all of that?

Very nice, good to see you're getting out now you've left Enlandshire :thumb

Getting out when I have time, haha. I need to start venturing a bit further afield for the better stuff though, seems the good stuff is few and far between up here

Yeah, I did, wasn't too bad. I think at the highest it was just over the top of the welly part of my waders. I knew water was a strong possibility so went prepared for it.

Is this still accessible? I thought Lidl shut up shop by claiming the land and fencing it off. I might need a wee mooch over to my local explore again.

This was after the fence went up, fences won't be your problem..... new boards/sheeting over the access might be ;)
