Bassaleg Mortuary
History
I couldn’t find any history on the Mortuary whatsoever other than it being closed and disused in 2018.
Planning permission has been granted as of August 2020 to rip down the mortuary, after the ambulance service purchased the land prior, and use the land as space to park vehicles.
The building itself is rather small consisting of a viewing room separated by glass, two toilets and the room in which houses the porcelain slab and a singular body fridge.

We decided to take a little trip for 5 days towards Somerset and stay in a beautiful little house in Shepton, we thought we would check out local explores and head to the Mortuary, the drive was a good hour, with some beautiful views and going over the Prince of Wales Bridge for the first time, we made it, parking was easy, access not so much, access was through the tiniest window, I’m quite slim so it was manageable.
As we entered, the smell was disgusting, luckily I had a face mask on hand which kept the smell away, it was peaceful and quiet but also eerie, being my first mortuary it was exciting, coffin lids and weighing scales were scattered all over the place, interesting to see the viewing room separated by the glass, a couple of male and female toilets, also the fridge, I had an urge to get inside and lay on the metal beds but couldn’t bring myself to do it.
We left, getting out was much harder than getting in! We ventured on to our next explore!
