In 1915 Short Brothers bought land in Cardington to build airships for the Admiralty. They constructed a 700 foot airship shed to construct R-31 and the R-32 Airship. They also constructed a small town for the workers called Shortstown.
A second shed (the green one) was added in 1928 and came from RNAS Pulham, Norfolk. Shed one was extended to 812 feet and raised by 35 feet. This was done to accommodate the ill fated R101 project.

In 1930 all airship work stopped and in 1936 Cardington became No 1 RAF Balloon Training Unit for training in the use of airships and barrage balloons.

Since then the sheds have been used for a number of uses including film sets and testing sound equipment. Shed one is now in a poor state but shed two is kept in good order.
