The tower is built in the grounds of a house called Cottingham Castle, which was built in the 1820s by Thomas Thompson and was destroyed by a fire in the 1860s, all that remains is a single turret. It was a folly in the garden of the original house.
Also in the 1820s the house gained it's fresh water supply from Spring head Pumping station.
The nearby site now has a hospital built on it, called Castle Hill Hospital.
