Many will know the history of this place so i will keep it short (ish)

Not far from the sea, Cefn Coed mental health hospital was a psychiatric hospital that opened in 1932 and is situated in Swansea North Wales.

The hospital was designed in a compact arrow style by the great George Thomas Hine, a leading architect who's work won several awards for other hospital designs.

it was used as a casualty hospital in world war 2 and at that time the first ECT machine was installed.

in 2002 it was reported that due to being understaffed, the hospital had to lock up patients in cells which you can see in one or two of my photographs.

In 2009 work started to build a brand new mental health facility on the same site and some patients were transferred to the newly built hospital that opened in 2012.

In March 2015, the health board's new low-secure mental health unit, Taith Newydd, opened in Bridgend, replacing some of the old wards at Cefn Coed.

In 2015, the NHS announced that the phased closure of Cefn Coed Hospital would continue for the next three to five years, with several decommissioned wards planned for demolition that year.

One early morning in June 2024 i decided to wake up and take a spontaneous drive down to wales from Derby.

After a lengthy 4 hour drive and the sun shining brightly, i finally made it to Wales alone without falling asleep at the wheel.

Parking wasn't an issue and i even managed to park relatively close to the hospital without any problems.

The security presence seemed none existent for a time but i did notice 2 fellas doing external patrols on one occasion.

I finally made my way inside and it was alot easier than i expected and having drove for 4 hours without a break, it was ideal.

Once i made my way inside i was greeted by the typical redundant smell and fascinated by the chequered floor tiles which eventually changed colours in different parts of the hospital.

Decay was quite evident in some areas which in my opinion adds to that "abandoned and desolate feel"

Although not quite as big as some of the other hospitals ive been in, it was still bigger than i expected after originally looking at it from above on google maps.

I eventually covered a majority of the hospital and finally made my way up the water tower and soaked up those lovely views from the top.

Thanks for looking.
