HISTORY

Sir John Seabright, 19th Century philanthropist, founded and built the West Herts Infirmary in Hemel Hempstead, in cc1831 at his own expense for the then massive sum of £13,000.

The property, now called Cheere House, is still there at the bottom of Hillfield Road in Hemel Hempstead.

Sadly though, like most of the hospital surrounding it, it has fallen into disrepair and is unused, and is heavily rumoured to be levelled and replaced with offices and yet more poxy housing.

Cheere House is of historical importance to Dacorum, and at almost 200 years old, should have had a protection order placed on it.

It is a disgrace that it is being left to rot and be wiped from the history of the town and Borough.

The Explore

A mate (Straight Outta Urbex) and myself ventured into Hemel Hempstead late one night, we had already explored a few places when we noticed this site and alot of it seemed derelict.

We made sure our cameras and flashlights were charged and aimed towards the large empty buildings.

It took a while to find the entrance point (may have been easier during the day) and walked on inside.

There was zero grafitti inside and I (Martin) began filming straight away - "yes - it's on the dreaded YouTube" and yes - another channel has already gone and done it straight after us.... but hey ho.. its due to be demolished soon and we wanted to document it and add it to our channel.

The corridors were dark and eerie, lit only by my flashlight, we could hear birds and rats scurrying around inside. The floors were particularly bad in many areas throughout - I only took a handful of still photographs and concentrated more on the adventure its self.

This building had a library and was used mainly by post graduates.

Conclusion

The derelict side of the Hospital Site is facing demolition with the idea of residential housing etc, replacing it.

Whilst the exterior is not looking to bad the insides tell another story of neglect and decay.

I hope you enjoy some of the shots I took
