Department Of Employment Building - Manchester - September 2010

Visited with Nick

The five storey Department of Employment Building also known as the Department of Social Security was completed in 1951, in the final year of King George VI reign and was one of the first new buildings to appear in Manchester following the end of the second world war. The building is opposite the courts on Aytoun street.

The building is to be demolished in the next few years to make way for the Albany Tower. At 43 storeys the residential tower will be 131m tall.

Ok, very little remains at this site internally, although structurally sound, its very dangerous. Certain areas are full of exposed needles from the smackheads, who seem to have vacated the building now. However, upon our tredge back to the exit, we heard a large bang and something else which told us is was time to get out of there. Unfortunately this means a lack of pictures.

Word of warning, if you do visit this place, do NOT go alone...
