Visited with urban junkie after seeing Nursepayne and Rez' reports earlier in the week.
Springfield Asylum was the first Surrey County Asylum, opening in 1841. It is certainly the oldest asylum i have visited and the first in surrey which is cool!
The site has changed since its asylum days, with new buildings being added etc. and it houses South West London & St. Georges mental Health NHS trust.
The hospital has been in the headlines before, as some of it patients have the tendency to escape and do gnarly shit. Since 2005, 30 patients have absconded or escaped from Springfields medium secure units, only eight cases were in the public eye at the time. And its not surprising walking round the grounds, we accidently stumbled into live corridors of the hospital, with quite a few doors wide open.
Pics!
I havent got the energy to post more photos, if you wanna see more they are here
There are plans afoot to develop the site, demolish quite a few listed outbuildings and generally bastardise the area, so i think there is more to come from Springfield in the future.
Oh and if you do go watch out for junkies and the floors, they are proper fucked in places and you won't know until you've stepped on the shit bits!
Cheers
