Fawley Power Station was an oil-fired power plant that was constructed between 1964 and 1971. It was commissioned in 1971 as a 2,000-megawatt station and contained four 500 MW generating units, each consisting of a boiler which supplied steam to a turbine that powered an associated generator. It is reported that the power plant was staffed by only sixty members of staff, but was capable of producing enough power to support over one million homes. When it first became operational, Fawley Power Station was considered to have been a state-of-the-art plant with experimental technology. It is rumoured that the power station also boasted a large tunnel which spanned a two-mile stretch beneath Southampton Water. The tunnel is said to have connected the power station to an area of land known as Chilling Barn; it housed two circuits which carried electricity to the national power grid.
Decommissioning of Fawley began in September 2012 due to the EU Large Combustion Plant Directive (legislation that limits flue gas emissions from combustion plants). The fact that the plant’s cooling water lines were found to kill as many as 50,000 fish a week is also likely to have contributed to its eventual closure. In the end, the station closed its doors less than a year later in March 2013. However, deconstruction and demolition of the plant is expected to take several years. Thereafter the future of the land remains largely undecided; although, there are rumours that the land will be redeveloped into an area designated for residential and commercial communities.
Our Version of Events
We received word that Slayaaaa, Mockney Reject and a couple of lasses were out exploring over the southern side of England. So, even though we were enjoying Pete Tong’s Ibiza classics at The 02 Arena, we immediately set off into the night towards Southampton. But, with little communication from the others we ended up kipping in the car at the site of BoomTown Fair. Unfortunately, we only managed three hours of kip before we were woken up by freezing cold temperatures, so we set off to find the Travelodge where the others were staying.
On arrival, everyone looked absolutely fucked. It was very obvious that we weren’t the only ones who’d only had a few hours kip. Nevertheless, we proceeded to make a ‘plan of attack’ and it went something like this: tea, breaky, take a shit, power station, party. With that finalised and set down on paper we cracked on and soon found ourselves at the site of Fawley Power Station.
After a quick walk, a talk with a few dog owners, and a wee bit of ducking and diving, we were suddenly running across the wasteland around the site. Thereafter, much like classic ninjas from the 80s, we were we suddenly inside the power station, walking amount turbines that had been extricated from their housing for the past few years. They’re flimsy looking things when you think about it – easily damaged and prone to rusting it would seem. From the turbine hall we made our way to a main stairwell to get a better view of the room from above.
