Fullabrook Wind Farm

Visited with Incognito.

So which forum? Live Sites, High Stuff or Industrial – you take your pick! Actually, lets leave it here in Non-Public! Its not something I will be gloating to many about! I sit here still wondering if I have just dreamt the last couple of hours?!? I still have adrenaline racing through my veins – not from nervousness or shock, but from sheer exhaustion after one hell of a climb!

Fullabrook Wind Farm in Devon has been in the planning for the last 10 years or so and everyone locally thought it would never be granted planning permission. Unfortunately for those who hate wind turbines, the planning application ended up circumventing the local planning authority & local councils due to the sheer size of the development and the generating capacity of the site – it was decided at government level that the planning application would be granted.

There has been work progressing on on site for the last 12 months or so, mainly cable, substation and road infrastructure. They have built several miles of temporary roads to allow delivery of these mighty 110 meter tall turbines! In the last three weeks construction of the turbines themself has started.

Each turbine consists of 8 separately delivered parts, each requiring a wide load escort:

The footing,
Three vertical columns,
The nacelle gearbox/generator housing,
Three blades.

The columns stand to 65 meters with 45 meter blades attached, giving the 110 meter overall height.

Some detailed descriptions here: http://www.devonwindpower.co.uk/wind-farm-construction

This site will generate at peak, 66 Mega Watt of electricity, via 22 Turbines.

After a quick walk around the site expecting just some external shots, you can imagine our surprise when we found the security of the turbine door itself was non-existent. We expect the Irish workman downed tools pretty quickly on Thursday and rushed off home to Ireland for their 4 days off, forgetting to lock the door behind them! There is still a single security guard on site driving around, but he obviously enjoys the warmth of his cab! He has obviously not checked that doors are locked etc!

It is difficult to explain just how much sway there is when you are sat in a small box some 65 meters in the air! I would guess atleast a foot either way.

Enough waffle – Enjoy the pics! All flashtastic due to the fact we thought we were shooting outside! Found it difficult to strip almost 100shots down to a respectable number for posting!
