No, I didn't break into one of Edinburgh's most prominent independent schools! Not this time anyway - I do remember "gaining access" after hours with some friends when I was a teenager and making use of the swimming pool after a skinful of White Lightning and MD2020, but that's another story. This was a sanctioned visit over the summer vacation. The school is open and appears to be thriving.

I'm not really sure where/whether this fits on this forum... I was exploring, it's somewhere urban with restricted access, the architecture is stunning, and I'm quite attached to a few of the photos.

Anyway, George Heriot's School was founded by the "Jinglin' Geordie", George Heriot, royal jeweler, in 1659. The original ethos was to provide a hospital school for boys whose fathers had died and therefore were unable to provide for their education. The Foundation still holds true to these aims by providing scholarships to gifted children whose fathers are absent, but the majority of pupils are now fee-paying. Girls were admitted in 1979. The school is very prominent in central Edinburgh - you can't really miss it if you look south from the castle esplanade.
