Gigawatt Power Plant/The Cloud factory Belgium June 2014

Visited with Bigjobs, drhowser and GAJ.

I don't know a great deal about Power Stations, how they work or which bit does what. However, I do know they have cooling
towers of awesome loveliness, pipes - lots and lots of pipes, and if you're lucky they also still have turbines :D
and I happen to really really like, cooling towers, pipes and turbines!

So, when I found out that our latest escapade, in the form of a rally across Europe, was also going to include a few non-rally
related activities, such as, maybe a Power Station or two I felt like a kid in a sweet shop and my inner geek almost went
into meltdown.

Belgium appears to be full of decomissioned Power Stations and as our first check-in for the rally was in Belgium, it would
have been rude of us not to have a mooch about in the Gigawatt Power Plant on the way.

I can't find a great deal about the history of Power Plant, mainly due to the fact that I only know it as Gigawatt Power
Plant/The Cloud Factory and google told me lots of stuff about clouds and gigawatts but nothing about the plant, however I
have gleaned the following tiny bit of history from other reports here and on the internet.

Gigawatt Power Station was Belgium's largest thermal power plant, opening in the 1960's with just two turbine sets. The
plant was expanded on several occasions to meet demand and by the 1990s there were six sets of turbines. Modern
heat-recovery techniques were added in an attempt to increase efficiency, however they failed to provide a sustainable
future for the plant forcing it to close in 2012.
We didn't spend too long here as people were working on the site, so we took a few pics and left.
