Helsinki, or Helstinki as i call it...

So, off to Finland i went for a fleeting visit to spend some time at Aalto University and to check out some nice little galleries etc etc. Thought it would be silly to go all that way without at least a little wandering. Sadly and a little regrettably instead of going out every night to places i shouldn't, i got smashed on very expensive drink every night in an assortment of shitty clubs and some a little better. When i wasn't so pissed i couldn't walk or letting myself into cars on the street, in the Moomin shop or generally being a bit of a pissed Brit and having various run in's with the Helsinki law enforcements i did this.

By the way, dont go to Helsinki, its miserable and fucking cold. -10 at night when i was there and apparently that was warm for the time of the year. Have stuck this in NP because of the person who owns one of the buildings, seems logical to keep it in NP for the foreseeable future please. Hope you see some bits you may not have seen before.

Port of Helsinki Tower

Not really sure what the purpose of these towers are besides having webcams that look over the port, needless to say it was the highest structure near the port and it seemed only logical to pop up one of them. They dont seem very high but considering its surroundings I suppose technically they are. Nice ladder all the way to the top to look out over the icey sea. Of course i forgot to photograph the structure so the first image is from one of the webcams from the port but on the left you can see the grey structure to see what it is i popped up.

City Center Campus railroad tunnel

Pasilla north harbour premier electrified section of line between 1960 and 1965, the tunnel itself is about 650m long, sadly the track has already been removed. There are construction sites at both ends of the tunnel currently.

Helsinki Olympic Stadium

The Helsinki Olympic Stadium is the largest stadium in the country, nowadays mainly used for hosting sports events and big concerts. The stadium is best known for being the centre of activities in the 1952 summer Olympics During those games, it hosted athletics equestrian show jumping and the football finals.

The stadium was also the venue for the first World Athletic Championships in 1983 as well as for the 2005 World Championships in Athletics It hosted the European Athletics Championships in 1971, 1994 and 2012.

As it turns out and what I found out at a later date, the actual tower is open to the public, I know this as a colleague went up it but was unable to take any photographs as the cold got to his Canon before he did. I didn't know this at the time as I strolled around the outside and around the back, after about a minute I discovered a nice little access point where a gate could be shimmied open and I managed to slip inside. I spent about 15 seconds stood in the stands before myself and the girl I was with decided, “fuck it, how many times are we going to get the opportunity to run around an Olympic stadium running track” and off we went, as we hit the first curve, bam, we were spotted and security collared us and off out we went the same way we got in. Probably in total spent less than 5 mins inside, but it was by far one of the funnest and quickest explores. Note my friend in the red coat in the third picture and security coming towards us in the last.

The Presidential Palace

The Presidential Palace in Helsinki is one of the official residences in Helsinki of the President of the Republic of Finland. It is situated on the north side of Esplanadi, overlooking Market Square. Designed by Carl Ludvig Engel and finished in 1845.

In its role as the official residence of the President of Finland, the Presidential Palace has hosted a number of important foreign visitors and dignitaries. Royal visitors to the palace have included Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Olav V of Norway, Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Juan Carlos I of Spain, the Shah of Iran, and Emperor Akihito of Japan. A number of US Presidents have visited the palace, including Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush. Other distinguished visitors have included Pope John Paul II, Josip Broz Tito, Nikita Khrushchev, Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin, and Horst Köhler.

After I did the weird tower thing at the harbour I was feeling pretty good so strolled over to this place, it was maybe about 4am and rather cold. I made my access and realized I had been in clear sight about 3m away from a couple of cameras facing straight at my face, undeterred I bolted for the roof and sat down for 5 mins and had a ciggi. I was sort of anticipating security, police or perhaps even some Finnish soldiers but nothing and no one came so on I went. Literally 4 hours later as i strolled past into town a little hungover and tired my access point had been sealed up so i guess someone saw the CCTV in the end. The building itself is currently having a little revamp hence how I could get on the roof. The building is also very very secure, after about an hour poking about trying to find a way in, I did but could only access the ground floor as all other windows and doors were very tightly locked and any stairs leading further up into the presidents house are also very very secure, shame that anything of interest has been moved out the ground floor, bit derp.. The first two images also arnt mine as again i forgot to photograph the place, a couple with men with guns standing outside the place. Notice the light fittings in the second stolen image, you should see them again in my photos, also note where the flag is in the stolen image as that sits in what was covered in a bin liner next to a brick chimney you can see also in my photos.

Like it Gabe. It certainly is a miserable place - as you say massively overpriced beverages and the inhabitants that don't look like they've had a day of fun in their lives.
