HMP Northeye…

Originally, in 1940, this site was used during the Second World War by the RAF as a Mobile Radio Unit.

Then in 1958, it became known as the RAF Wartling Domestic Site which consisted of hutted accommodation and a Married Quarters estate.

In 1964, the RAF Wartling radar station closed. The site then reopened in the January of 1969 as a prison. HMP Northeye was a Category C prison and used many of the original RAF buildings as prison buildings, however in the 1970's more were added.

On day in April 1986, the inmates had an altercation with the guards and on the evening of the 30th of April, approximately 60 out of the 450 inmates set fire to the buildings.

In the October of 1992 the prison shut down for good and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) refurbished the site to be used for a technical training project. This project was aimed to prepare a younger generation of UAE nationals who were at UK colleges looking for a technical future in the UAE Armed Forces.

The project ended in 2010 and the grounds had been left disused since.

Last month, it was announced that it would be used again but now as a holding centre for 1,200 immigrants crossing the English Channel.
