I know I use the word a lot but this place is awesome, I do say this place, as its 1 quarry but
It was worked as 2 quarry's. Different parts were owned by different people.
DHL has done this one before so was a top guide for the day. It is well known in the cave
diving community. As it has a couple of stunning lakes. but I found out that they both go down
a passage to rock face. But there is talk that one may have more passages hidden somewhere.
So here is some info I found on the place....
High quality Chert was mined and quarried for almost 2 centuries in the Holme Mines.
In 1772 Josiah Wedgwood had discovered that flint ground between chert stone gave
a far superior white body to his pottery. This revolutionised the pottery industry.
It was the introduction of steel ball mills during the early 20th century caused the Chert
workings to decline into oblivion by 1968.
