Knowsley Street Station

Knowsley Street station opened as the eastern terminus of the Liverpool and Bury Railway in 1848, named 'Bury'. In 1866 it was renamed 'Bury Market Place', and in 1888 it was renamed as 'Bury Knowsley Street'. The station closed in 1970, and there is now no trace of the station buildings or platforms. The station site is now occupied by a car park and a large area of wasteland; 3 odd-looking pyramids stand there, as part of a landscaping project.
When the ELR reopened the route, a bridge over the Metrolink was constructed. Two platforms stand on the bridge, seemingly paying homage to the station.

The Knowsley Street bridge. The original 1848 sign, ELR bridge marking, and remains of the footbridge are still standing. Through the archway we can see a second bridge: this is the Manchester Road bridge. The archway to the right leads towards Bury South Signal Box and the Bury Bolton Street Station. A second archway would have been on the left (it has been covered over with grass and dirt) that led towards Buckley Wells.

The crossing: all that remains of the original station.

The arches in the bridge give some indication as to how many tracks ran in and out of this station. The wasteland seen in the picture housed a large depot with many sidings and sheds, as at least 3 separate lines ran in and out of this station.

The Metrolink as seen from the bridge. The track had to be raised to accommodate the new Metrolink and has now been nicknamed the 'Ski Slope'. The location of the original passenger platform would have started at the base of the ELR bridge and would have extended backwards towards the Knowsley Street Bridge, however it has now been demolished and covered over to build the Ski Slope.

A bit of a strange one this - quite a lot still to see, yet nothing left of the station itself.
Still ticking the ELR stuff off the list...
