First used by the German Army as a new cavalry base and army driving centre in 1937, towards the end of the war when the Nazi's knew the end was near they abandoned the site and shortly afterwards the Russians took it over in a day without a single shot being fired. After the war the soviets continued to use it as a training camp.
After the reunification of Germany the camp was dispersed, finally being abandoned in 1992; BUT it is the site that just keeps astounding you, we found Nazi WW2 painted signs in one of the garages, fold up boats in a basement, Soviet graffiti & carvings in the attic. Sadly it seems though its time is up ... after being derelict for so many years there are plans in pace to keep the more significant building and demolish the rest for ... you’ve guessed it housing!
This site is HUGE Lilli and I have visited at least 3 times and if we're lucky there may be time for one last 'wander'. I know a few people have visited but all they seem to be interested in displaying are one or two of the buildings with tenuos links to a few movies. Well here's the rest of the place.......
