Yet another of the Clyde AA defences from WW2
A "SF" or Starfish decoy was a defence designed to fool the german bombers who were planning to bomb a town or city.
These decoys were placed a couple of miles into the countryside away from towns or industry.
In a typical bomb raid, remembering that navigation during WW2 was still by a navigator using a map and whatever he could see from plane windows, a "pathfinder" usually would precede the main waves of bombers and drop Incendiary bombs and flares to start fires which the following bombers would then home in on and drop there.
A Starfish decoy would light false fires designed to resemble a burning town and fool the bombers into dropping there instead.
The decoys achieved some success but Greenock, Dumbarton, Cardross and Clydebank were all successfully attacked at various points in 1941.

bunker is set about 1 1/2 miles above the clyde in middle of farmland
it is partly buried with an earth (baffle bank?) around 3 sides and covered over in soil to a depth of around 2 feet

this bunker follows the typical pattern of an entrance corridor with 2 rooms off the end. left hand room housing the escape hatch and right hand room holding the engine room.
most of the original plaster remains on the walls to a depth of around an inch, the walls were whitewashed and there is still some original writing remaining on them.
there are large pipes (about 12 inches across) running outside from 2 sides of the engine room
and many remnants of piping, wiring and woodwork.

outside there is much evidence of the false fire bases
This bunker has much more remaining than any other I have visited in the clyde group.
but it is full of mud and water to at least 4 inches throughout, (glad I wore wellies this time)
and has 3 swallows nests in it
