Not so much an explore report as a documentary record, so popping this in “Other”. Sheffield City Council continue to allow people to knock lovely pre-1900 buildings down rather than refurbish them and this development continues the theme.

Would loved to have explored these places before they got knocked down but the site have been busy most of the time and the contractors have an on-site office.

Pinstone Street connects the two shopping areas of Fargate and The Moor in the centre of the city. Originally called Pinstone Lane, its eastern side contains Sheffield Town Hall and the Peace Gardens. It’s now in the process of being developed via a Multi-million pound plan for 250 flats and office blocks.

Laycock House, south of the Citadel, with Cross Burgess Street to the north, Pinstone Street to the east and Charles Street to the west is being retained but the rest of this triangular wedge has been or is being demolished, including the former Athol Hotel.

In terms of the Pinstone Street buildings, this is the greater loss architecturally. At least the façade of the late Victorian building which has survived the 20th and early 21st centuries (a date stone puts it at 1884) is being retained, but everything behind it is being demo'ed and completely rebuilt.

On with the photo.

The Eastern corner of the Pinstone street block:

And the third side of the triangle facing the new HSBC building:

The former Salvation Army building – safe for now but future uncertain:

Layock House is being retained:

But the rest of the block is being knocked down:

So that means goodbye to the Athol Hotel:

Destruction of beautiful architectural buildings such as this boils my blood. And to be replaced by ugly, lifeless/soulless boxes & glass. It disgusting. Its good you good photos for generations to look back on
