Report - Mäusebunker animal research centre, Berlin - Oct 2020

We had been told it was impossible to get in. So while in Berlin we thought we would just take some photos of the outside.
But then we thought, let's just try a few ways in, as we're here... and bingo, we were in.

Designed by husband and wife team, Gerd and Magdalena Hänska in the mid-1960s and built from 1971 to 1981, this reasearch centre is a great example of brutalist architecture, and has now been listed as a cultural heritage site.

It was built for the purpose of live animal testing, for research into new medicines and vaccines. It held over 45,000 mice and 20,000 rats.

It closed in 2010 and was due for demolition, before becoming a listed building.
