Just below the Marefield Junction, is a culvert built to divert a stream at the north junction. Opened in 1879, and closed to regular traffic in 1953. Not the first attempt at an explore, but finally succeeded with the right equipment. Don’t know why they went to the expense of building a junction underground – the east entrance is just one portal, but the west end has two. Can only assume they built the tunnels first, then built the railway almost 20 meters above.
