Report - Melin Gwna - Bodorgan, Anglesey - July 23

This has been posted a couple of months ago but we really liked it so posting our take on it. We've done a few watermills recently from fully intact to ruins and this place is one of our favourites, we're working our way through posting them all.

History - There has been a mill on this site since the medieval period, records can be traced back to the 13th century. The current mill was derelict but complete in 1975, with just one end of the roof beginning to collapse. It was a stone building of two storeys, set into the slope so as to allow access to the stone floor through a door on the north-east side. The composite overshot wheel was made by J Jones, Bridge Foundry, Holyhead. The mill is now mostly a ruin and the trees are reclaiming the remains. There are also ruins of a small cottage associated with the mill.

Explore - This is a really nice explore, while mostly ruined there is lots left to find and it all emerges from the surrounding woods as you move through the site.

Your shots are great, way better than mine. The undergrowth was a nightmare when we went. We got ripped to shreds just getting to it 🤣

Oh yeah right in the peak of summer. I can imagine it was tricky!

I live down the road and one of my favourite walks is through there. I have always been puzzled as to the original water course, given that the stream is much lower than the mills, unless they used a pretty big penstock!
