National Gas Turbine Establisment ,Pyestock
Mortified Penguin and lord lucan
After seeing some the reports and pictures from pyestock it looked at first glance an urban explorers paradise and indeed it was. With stories of tough security we decided to get in there before sunrise. The entrance was unusaly easy and without any hint of security we thought things were going to well.
Firstly we stumbled over test cell 3. This cell was used for testing turbines in high altitude conditions (cold, low air pressure) using ammonia to chill the air upto -50 degrees c, The air charge could also be subjected to vacuum to create sparse air charge and mesuring the effect on the engines thrust.
Poor excuse for a picture i know but its the only one i have
The airhouse was very impressive with its eary noises and the shear size of the place well preserved too. With the 500,000 bhp of compressors here they could charge the air through the pipes at mach 2!
to simulate supersonic flight. I was having a look around by myself when i heard the voice of lord lucan "alrite mate" in the mumbled distance. At this point i was pretty certain our luck had ran out with security but infact lucan had ran into some fellow urbexers....and a few more
.
At first glance its all very confusing on what roll each part of the site played. The covesiation all day was "whats this do?? its for this.... i think.... no it aint its.... i dunno"
:. It wasnt until we got home we understood some of the things this site used to do.
Pneumatic Nightmare
Have no clue what this building was for. It has marnine turbine testing rigs running along the side of the building.
control room
We picked an ace day for it
Mimic diagram for the reheat rig
This poster suggests the building was obserlete in 1996??
Reconnected to power the sahara film set "04"
cell 4 control
Toolige
Part of the sahara fim set (Cell 4)
Time flew by
Mimic control Cell3??
I cant see many other sites matching the standards of this place, A day will nowere near be enough to have a good look around. We tried again a few weekends later but we got busted. We got some usefull infomation from the security guard. Apparantly the site is being demolised soon to make way for a tesco distribution centre. A real shame as this site was right at the begining
of turbine power and was purposly built to discover and develop this dark force. This site was also responsible for the reserch and development of projects such as the tsr2,concorde and the 3 spool theory.
Another british heritage landmark soon to be reduced to rubble.
Make the most of it while you can
