So here's my first report, a visit to Nettleton top mines from last April.
A little bit of history:
Nettleton Iron Mine was first opened about 1928 by the Mid Lincolnshire Ironstone Co. (later John Lysaghts and finally British Steel Corporation). Originally horses were used for haulage with locos introduced in the 1930s. Tubs of ore being tipped from the 2ft 6in system into buckets which were then conveyed by aerial ropeway. In turn the ropeway was replaced by a lorry road which still exists today. The mines had closed by 1968.
Some of the pics are a little grainy, more light definitely needed!
Nice view on the approach
The only way in!
Roof collapse, lumps almost look like a body
Much more to go after the collapse, we headed back at this point!
A couple more collapses in the side tunnels
Thanks for looking!
