In the early nineteenth century it was found that monolingual Welsh people afflicted with mental health problems suffered inordinately in English asylums. It was for this reason that construction on North Wales Hospital (aka Denbigh Asylum) began in 1844. The place opened in 1848 & was added to & extended until, at its peak in the 1950s, it housed 1500 in-patients & employed 1000 staff.
The death-knell was sounded in 1960 when Enoch Powell (yes, him) paid a visit & in short order produced a hospital plan whereby the mentally ill would be cared for in general hospitals & in the community. The closure finally began in 1991, the main building was closed in 1995 & the site was completely abandoned in 2002.
I visited this place in February but I've only joined 28dl in the last week. I took 200-odd pics which can be found at my site.
