Whilst living in Berlin an art project referred to as AKW-Atomkraftwerk was made known to me.The Soviets built 50 water cooled nuclear reactors all over eastern Europe and had commenced building one in what we called the triangle..which meant it was between Berlin-Magdeburg-Hanover.The original concept was for this site was 6 reactors..theyd managed to build two..the first was 75% finished and they were already onto the second..then Chernobyl over reacted coating the whole of northern Europe in a radioactive blanket. There was an international ban on any more of these reactors being built..this project had already been going for a number of years..7000 people had worked 24/7 around the clock and it was promptly abandoned. The whole site was 10 sq kms and was located on the side of the river Elbe.
Part of the art project was petitioning the new owners Siemens AG to create a denkmalshutz out of it ..to have it is as a listed building..and as a monument to the failure of the nuclear industry. They ignored us on that one.We had official permission to enter...the friendly guard actually cropped the lock on the front gate for it..and it was mid winter and well below minus..as you l see from the photos. The cooling towers were 65ms high..but we had no incentive to climb them as we would have frozen to death. It was the most ominous structure i have ever witnessed..simply an incredible mastery of modern design. We scaled the inside of of Reactor 1..really dangerous as the wooden decking was rotten.
After a few hrs there we gathered around a fire some of our crew had lit..with only the sound of the icy wind and wild geese in the background. Then someone said.."its like the end of the world isnt it?'..we laughed....
It was finally demolished about 7 years ago.

The photographs were shot on Ektachrome 400 slide on a Canon F1.They deteriorated with age..but ive scanned them and done a Photoshop restoration on them.
