Some time last year, myself and another fellow of Derby's rag-tag band of explorers went to investigate a curious looking complex of conveyors served by a rusting overgrown railway line in North Derbyshire. Assuming it was to do with Quarrying, we found out it was in fact a Coal disposal point, which made sense considering the areas history with mining.
Despite being clearly abandoned for a few years, was well secured despite the rather lazy security guard on site. Sadly we gave up, got a few exterior shots and went on our way back down the A38 - further research suggested that it had been attempted before and the same problem of it being sealed was encountered. I stuck it in the "requires future investigation" box... but then forgot about it.
Then last week I got a text of another local accomplice, Mendo. He got inside, and spoke highly of the internal stuff. I decided it was rude of me not to pay a visit after the futile efforts last year. Oxcroft Coal Disposal Point, a short distance from the ever noisy M1 was built by the National Coal Board in 1980 and processed coal from opencast mining for power stations and other industrial concerns in the Midlands.
Eventually it passed to UK coal and operated until 2006, however reopened when the coal rich area was turned into an opencast mine. It closed again in 2007 and has remained closed ever since. I'm glad to get this done, and ultimately another one off the list as far as I'm concerned. Thanks to Mendo for the info, Raptor Jesus for the driving and James because if I don't mention him he'll probably sulk
A reasonably compact site, full of machinery and stuff - just the ticket for a lazy afternoon
