My question is : As I have no underground experience, are there any members who would help me visit? I would need to borrow equipment, and I have no transport from Chirk, 15 miles away. I would be very happy to chip in £100 for costs. The mine is about 35 minutes walk from road.

Hi Regcar, If I were you I would consider joining a local caving club because often they have organised trips to the likes of Penarth and can also supply the equipment, group leaders etc. have a look at the likes of UCET who do regular Thursday night trips to lots of places like Penarth, Hendre and alike, not sure that they can help with the transport but definately worth checking out...you just never know :)

Thanks - I did not know about UCET, and have registered on that forum. Sorry about the links, but they do work if clicked.Fabulous place on a sunny day. Suppose weather makes little difference underground.

Thanks to all your help I joined UCET, and now have a visit lined up. Hope to see just how big it really is with some decent lights.

Camera shy - thanks for the correction re photos. Just realised that all my photos show up. All the food ones relate to supermarket offers. Hope the picture of the well built young lady does not offend, but she is decent, and would be a great prize for a sad old git like me.

The James Darlington Memorial is just across the hill from the mine, Yellowstone Falls a bit further away.

You are in good hands with UCET, just take some biscuits for the farmers dogs on the way up, I never saw them on the two occasions that I went to Penarth but I believe that they are bastardly things :)
Have fun:thumb

I have never seen the farmer's dogs, as I have always used the track from Llidiart-y-Parc, and I had assumed everyone else went that way. Hopefully the same people who will protect me in the caves will also fight off the dogs. Some great information on UCET.
