The Big One and Valhalla
Pleasure Beach, Blackpool - January 2013

"See It, Feel It, Love It"

Visited with Bigjobs, drhowser, Hidden and Millhouse.

Spent an age freezing our balls off, circumnavigating the site, helping lost children and drinking coffee before finally running amok inside the theme park. The main event here is obviously the Pepsi Max, but Millhouse has had this strange, inexplicable desire for a while now to get inside the workings of Valhalla. And so... with some persistence, and ultimately a lot of needless skulking about, we were eventually presented with a wide open door.

Valhalla

Opened in 2000 at a cost of £15 million, Valhalla was one of the most expensive water rides to be built in the world at that time - and is the longest indoor dark ride in the world. Valhalla uses special effects which incorporate fire, water, snow, thunder and lightning. Riders can expect dramatic changes in temperature and artificial snow, with extremes of temperature from -20°C to 40°C. They can expect to get wet too.

The ride's internal supporting structure consists partially of removed track sections from the Big One roller coaster. These are not typically visible, but became exposed during the ride's facade refurbishment in 2012.

The Big One

The Big One is a hyper coaster with a highest point of 71.6 m (235 ft) above sea level or 65 m (213 ft) above the ground. It reaches speeds of up to 119 km/h (74 mph). It was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world when it opened in 1994, and was designed by Ron Toomer.
