Quite an odd explore in that there are no personal belongings or porn anywhere.

Portavadie with its deep water offshore was chosen as an oil-platform construction site when the government was rushing to cash in on the North Sea Oil, similar yards were created at Nigg in Easter Ross and Whiteness, near Ardersier, in the Highlands. Portavadie dry docks, one of the largest in Europe were intended for the construction of concrete platforms but the industry changed quickly and the demand for steel platforms grew leaving Portavdie without orders.

The village of Pollphail was constructed with public money for £3.3 million in 1975 to accommodate an estimated 500 oil platform construction workers that never came, the village at that time was a very modern complex with retail kiosks, a bar, cafeteria, a bank and even a basic hospital facility. They were so prepared even the dorms were fully equipped with basic furnishings, sheets on the beds and coat hangers in the cupboards, some of which are still there.

The dry dock, unused, worn down by weather fell into disrepair but has been turned into a swanky new marina offering "affordable luxury to everyone" with its "glorious two-tiered glass fronted restaurants, viewing tower and the indulgent spa building" :gay

The village however has been in and out of the planning process for almost a decade with various schemes falling through, the only inhabitants for the last 30 odd years have been the sheep and a colony of bats. Pollphail has all the usual signs of decay but it's missing the personal touch you get from inhabited buildings, plants have turned into trees, swallows nesting on the lampshades and sheep shit everywhere. In in 2009 Matthew Lloyd directed a creative documentary "painting a startling portrait of a village in limbo, through the eyes of two men who share an obsession with the strange place. Director Matthew Lloyd explores the imagined future for the village, combining unusual use of archive with stunning photography and a haunting soundscape." the film premiered at the Inverness Film Festival and a short extract can be seen on the Scottish Documentary Institute website.

Also in 2009 the "Ghost Village Project" was created, it took 3 days, 6 artists were given free reign to paint whatever they desired anywhere on the site. One of the most famous shots is the washing machine faces, the project was filmed and can be viewed on the agents of change website. "The artists’ stated intent on completion of the project was to populate the Ghost village with the art and characters that it deserved." People have painted on the site since but its mostly utter shite, if your into paint then its worth going to see the good stuff before it fades away completely…
